From his early days as the water boy for the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, a role he still cherishes as the best job he's ever had, to his current status as a Texas BBQ icon, Matt Pittman's journey is a testament to his unique blend of Texas charm, BBQ expertise, and business acumen. His ability to masterfully navigate the worlds of brand, media, retail, and merchandising is truly something to marvel at.
My #pod partner and good friend Steve Dennis and I entered a vibrant scene at Matt's store on a bustling Saturday. It was a lively block party, teeming with his vendors, fans, and fellow BBQ pitmasters, all united in celebrating the 10th anniversary of his Meat Church BBQ Supply store. This store was the festivities' epicentre, a hub of his passion, media, and North American product phenomena.
I celebrate with a Dubreton pork chop cook (check out that great new packaging!!), using Matt's signature seasoning, on an old-school kettle charcoal BBQ, finishing with some amazing glaze from Austria.
Matt's compact store is a temple of retail experience, with a nonstop progression of people making a pilgrimage to his store to genuflect at the Meat Church logo, grab a free cup of beer, and shop for BBQ products, best-in-class seasonings, and dozens of different and fun branded swag (several of which are now featured on the set and in the cooks of my Last Request BBQ show!).
Outside, the line to meet Matt was over an hour long as locals and folks like myself waited to wish him well. And that's right — his beautiful Mill Scale Metalworks 1,000-gallon offset smoker parked out front of the store is a recycled Superior Propane tank: as an Ottawa native, I was pre-ordained to worship Meat Church!
